Historic Fun Near Homestead
Homestead is nestled in the Texas Hill Country between San Antonio and Austin, where the quiet beauty of this rugged landscape has attracted settlers for hundreds of years. This has resulted in an area with a rich history and a strong sense of Texas pride, which is reflected in Homestead’s design and the historic sites surrounding the community. Here are a few of our favorite places to visit and things to do, just a short drive from Homestead.
Take a Stroll Down Memory Lane
Schertz’s Main Street has been a social hub of the town since its founding, and it continues to be a place to gather with friends and support local businesses. Thanks to the efforts of the Historical Preservation Committee, the area seems almost frozen in time. Pick up a beautiful bouquet at the family-owned and -operated Contreras Flowers & Gifts. Then stroll down the street to Best Friendz for memorable gifts with a Texas twist. Relax with a sit-down family meal at Melanie’s Café, and afterwards grab some dessert at Schertz Treats.
Date Night in Cibolo
A visit to the Old Main Ice House is one you won’t forget. Located in a building from the 1920s, Old Main Ice House is an open-air bar with indoor and outdoor seating, lawn games and alternating food trucks. Kid-friendly before sundown, you can take the whole family to play games in the afternoon, or go in the evening to gaze at the stars, sip wine and enjoy time with your significant other.
For a more immersive historical experience, try the 1908 House of Wine and Ale. This local favorite is located in a family home that was built in 1908 and recently renovated, saving as much of the original building as possible and decorated with pieces from the period like cast-iron tools and furniture. Try the wine on tap, craft beer or small bites made with locally-sourced ingredients while you soak it all in.
Catch a Show in San Antonio
The Majestic Empire Theatre in San Antonio is well known, and for good reason. Built in 1929, this theatre is one of the few remaining vintage vaudeville movie palaces and has lost none of its awe-inspiring charm. Lavishly decorated, it’s easy to imagine old-time movie goers spending their Saturday evenings here, dressed to the nines. Today, you can take a step back in time and enjoy amazing shows, concerts and live performances in this painstakingly preserved theatre.
All Aboard in New Braunfels
Kids and adults alike will be enthralled with all there is to discover at the Railroad Museum in New Braunfels. Inside the museum you can view tons of artifacts from the golden age of railroad transportation, including photos and expansive models. Outside, you can explore completely restored train cars, including a locomotive, caboose, and dining and box cars. You can even rent a dining car for private parties to truly experience what life in the 1920s was like!
Take Flight in San Marcos
At the Commemorative Air Force Central Texas Wing in San Marcos, you can see, hear and touch all kinds of Air Force artifacts and memorabilia. Committed to keeping aviation history alive for future generations, this museum features a hangar full of historical planes used by the Air Force as well as preserved uniforms, gear and equipment. For a more thrilling experience, you can even take a flight in some of their planes!
